Mobile’s new transit network starts September 28.

Fast & frequent public transit for all of Mobile.

Navigate Mobile with Second Line Transit. Find the fastest and easiest route to your destination, whether by bus, microtransit ride, or both.
A new transit network for Mobile

The Wave is now Second Line Transit.

Second Line Transit is the result of a year-long redesign of Mobile’s transit network. The name honors Mobile’s second line traditions and was chosen through community input in a public vote. The redesign modernizes a system that had changed little in more than 20 years: eleven updated bus routes, more frequent service, and a much larger microtransit zone connecting more people to jobs and key destinations.

Improved access to transit across Mobile

Explore the service area map to see the new bus network and the microtransit zone. Efficient routes connect downtown, the University of South Alabama, Bel Air Mall, Tillman’s Corner, the airport road corridor, Providence Hospital, Mobile Infirmary, and Airbus.

Frequently Asked Questions

General

What happened to The Wave?

The Wave Transit is now Second Line Transit, a rebrand that grew out of a year-long redesign of Mobile’s transit network. The name honors Mobile’s second line traditions and was chosen through community input in a public vote. The redesign modernizes a system that had changed little in more than 20 years, expanding transit access for residents and connecting people to more jobs and key destinations, with a new network of updated routes, more frequent service, and expanded microtransit.

What is changing with the redesign?

Three things. The bus network is now eleven routes (A through K) that run more frequently and more directly. Microtransit covers a much larger service zone with longer hours. And paratransit moves to a right-sized ADA service area, with an Extended Access zone so riders affected by the new boundaries keep their service.

When does Second Line Transit start?

Second Line Transit begins service Monday, September 28

What services does Second Line Transit operate?

Three: Second Line Bus (eleven fixed routes), Second Line Microtransit (shared on-demand rides within the service zone), and Paratransit (curb-to-curb service for certified eligible riders).

Is my bus stop moving?

Some stops moved, changed, or closed as part of the network redesign. Look for a notice posted at your stop, check the route pages on this site, or call (251) 344-6600 and we’ll help you find your new stop. Where a stop closed, Second Line Microtransit can get you to that location instead.

Is there Sunday service?

No. Second Line Bus and Second Line Microtransit run Monday through Saturday. Paratransit also runs Monday through Saturday.

When is Second Line Transit closed?

Second Line Transit does not run on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Lundi Gras, Mardi Gras, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and December 26.

Where can I see service alerts?

Service alerts are on the homepage, sorted by Bus, On-demand, and Paratransit. Alerts also appear in the Second Line Transit app.

Why do the drivers make me show my ID?
All reduced fare passengers are required to show their Wave Transit ID to receive the reduced fare.

Getting started & the app

How do I start riding?

Download the Second Line Transit app from the App Store or Google Play Store and follow the signup steps. Enter your start and end addresses, choose the option that works best for you — bus, microtransit, or a combination of the two — and go. For the bus, you don’t need an account: just show up at your stop and pay when you board.

What can I do in the Second Line Transit app?
Plan a trip across the whole network, book microtransit and paratransit rides, track your vehicle in real time, manage your trips, and pay by card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
Can I use the service without a smartphone?

Yes. Call (251) 344-6600 to book a microtransit ride, or (251) 344-5656 for paratransit, and our team will book it for you. You can also book from a computer using our web booking portal. For the bus, no app or account is needed.

Is the app available in Spanish?
Yes. The app and web app are available in English and Spanish.
How do I plan a trip that uses both the bus and microtransit?

Enter your start and end addresses in the app or the journey planner on this site. If a combined trip is fastest, you’ll see it as an option, including where to transfer. Transfers between Second Line Bus and Second Line Microtransit are free.

Bus

What are the bus hours?

Monday to Friday, 6:00am to 7:30pm. Saturday, 8:00am to 9:00pm. No Sunday service.

How many routes are there, and where do they go?

Eleven routes, A through K, connecting downtown and the GM&O Transportation Center with the University of South Alabama, Bel Air Mall, Prichard, Tillman’s Corner, Providence Hospital, the airport corridor, Airbus, and a downtown circulator. Each route page has a map, stop list, and timetable.

How often do buses come?

It depends on the route — most run every 30 to 60 minutes. Route I (Airbus / GM&O) runs every 30 minutes, and Route K (Downtown Circulator) runs every 30 minutes on Saturdays. Check your route page for exact frequency and first and last trips.

How much does the bus cost?

$1.25 per ride. Discounts are available with ID for students, seniors 65+, riders with disabilities, and military. Children age 5 and under ride free with a fare-paying adult.

How do I pay on the bus?

Cash is accepted onboard — have your fare ready when you board. You can also use your MyWAVE card, the MyWAVE app, or a MyWAVE pass.

Can I track my bus?

Yes. Track your bus in real time in the Second Line Transit app, or in the Avail Web App.

Where do I find timetables and maps?
Every route page has a route map, an ordered stop list, a timetable, and a downloadable schedule. The full system map is on the Bus page.
What if I miss my bus?

Check the app for the next arrival. If the wait is long or your stop is no longer served, Second Line Microtransit may be able to get you there — the app will show you the options.

Can I share my Monthly Pass with another rider?

No, the monthly pass is only valid for one swipe per ride or passenger trip.

Microtransit

What is Second Line Microtransit?

Second Line Microtransit is an on-demand public rideshare service. Enter your pickup and dropoff locations, meet your driver at the designated location, and we’ll get you to your destination.

What are the microtransit hours?

Monday to Friday, 5:00am to 10:00pm. Saturday, 6:00am to 10:00pm. No Sunday service.

Where does microtransit go?

Anywhere within the microtransit service zone — one large zone covering roughly 72 square miles, much larger than the former Mogo area.

How much does a microtransit ride cost?

$1.25 per ride. Students, seniors, riders with disabilities, and active military ride for $0.60 (ID required). Children age 5 and under ride free with a fare-paying adult.

Transfers to and from the bus are free.

Why do I have to walk to meet my ride?

Second Line Microtransit operates corner to corner instead of door to door. This means you might have to walk a short distance to your pickup point. Our system assigns you to a “virtual bus stop” — pickup and dropoff points usually at a nearby corner. This is how we’re able to pick up multiple passengers without adding a significant amount of time to each rider’s journey.

What are the points of interest in the app?

Points of interest are stops in the service zone you can get rides to or from.

What do the vehicles look like?
All vehicles are branded with Second Line Transit’s logo and colors, so they should be easy to spot.
Who will I be sharing my ride with?

Other passengers headed in the same direction may be picked up and dropped off during your trip. This keeps the service fast and affordable.

Can I prebook a microtransit ride?

No. Second Line Microtransit offers on-demand rides only. When requesting a ride, try to request 20 to 30 minutes before you need to leave.

Can I bring someone with me?

Sure. You can book rides for you and any additional passengers.

Can I bring a service animal or pet with me?

Service animals are always welcome to ride without restriction. Driver partners have a legal obligation to provide service to riders with service animals. If you are traveling with a service animal and want to report an issue, email support-support@ridesecondline.com.

Pets that are not service animals are also allowed, but should be kept in an airline-approved carrier.

Why can’t I get a long distance ride?

Microtransit trips are capped at 6 miles on weekdays and 8 miles on Saturdays so more riders can get a vehicle. For longer trips, the app will offer the best journey, which may combine microtransit and the bus.

Why do I keep seeing bus options in the app?

The app shows the best available way to reach your destination — a microtransit ride, a bus, or a combination of the two. If a bus serves your trip more efficiently, we may show you a bus option.

How do I know where and when to meet my driver?

Once a ride is confirmed, you’ll see your driver’s estimated time of arrival in the app and can follow their progress in real time. The app gives you directions to your virtual bus stop, which may be a short walk away. Follow the dotted line to your exact pickup spot.

Why can’t I request a ride?

Sometimes, if we’re experiencing high demand in your area, there may not be any vehicles or drivers currently available. If your travel plans are flexible, try requesting again in a few minutes. Calling will not increase your ability to book a ride — our agents book the same way you do in the app.

Can I edit my pickup or dropoff location?

Once you start a ride, the destination cannot be changed. If you have not yet boarded the vehicle, you can cancel the ride and re-book with a new pickup or destination address.

How do I cancel my ride?

Cancel directly in the app or by calling our support team. Canceling at the last minute affects other riders, so please cancel as soon as you know you don’t need a ride.

What should I do if my driver leaves without me?
Re-book your ride in the app, then email support@ridesecondline.com explaining the situation.

Paratransit

What is paratransit?

As defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, people with a physical or functional disability that limits their ability to use accessible fixed-route public transportation may be eligible for demand-response service. Paratransit is a shared-ride, curb-to-curb service — door-to-door when assistance is needed — with reservations made from the day before up to 14 days in advance.

What are the paratransit hours?

Monday through Saturday, 4:30am to 10:00pm.

How much does paratransit cost?
$2.50 per trip.
Who is eligible for paratransit?

Riders who live within ¾ of a mile of an established fixed bus route and who, because of a disability, cannot board, ride, or exit an accessible vehicle without help from another person; riders with a disability who could ride an accessible vehicle but whose route is not accessible; riders with a specific impairment-related condition that prevents travel to or from a boarding location; and riders with a temporary disability who meet ADA requirements.

I already ride paratransit. Do I need to re-apply?

No. If you are already eligible, your status transfers automatically.

What is changing for paratransit riders?

Service area boundaries change to a new core ADA zone. If you live outside the new zone, or you have taken a ride outside the new zone in the last three months, you’re eligible to ride in the Extended Access zone, slightly beyond the new borders. Booking moves to (251) 344-5656, and you can now book in the Second Line Transit app or on the web. Credit and debit cards are accepted as a new payment option.

What is staying the same for paratransit riders?
Hours remain Monday through Saturday, 4:30am to 10:00pm. Rides are still $2.50 each, and you can still pay with your Mobility MyWAVE card or a digital MAP ticket. You can still prebook up to 14 days in advance and at least 24 hours ahead. The drivers you know will continue to help you get around.
How do I apply?

Request an application by calling (251) 344-5656, download it from this website, or pick one up at the GM&O Transportation Center, 110 Beauregard Street, Suite 104. Complete every field — “N/A” answers are not accepted. Processing can take up to 21 business days, and all applicants complete an in-person functional assessment.

Once I am certified, is it permanent?
No. Certification lasts three years. Request a recertification application at least three months before the expiration date on your ID to avoid an interruption in service.
How do I book a paratransit ride?

Three ways: call (251) 344-5656, book in the Second Line Transit app, or book from a computer using the web portal.

How far in advance can I book?

From 14 days in advance up to the day before your trip, at least 24 hours ahead of your departure time.

What happens if I need to cancel a trip?

Call as soon as you know. You can cancel from the day before up until one hour before your scheduled pickup.

What is a pickup window, and what happens if I miss my ride?
If you are not ready when your vehicle arrives, the driver will wait five minutes after your scheduled pickup time. After five minutes the driver must continue on to other riders, and the trip is recorded as a no-show. If you no-show on the first part of your trip and do not contact our office within one hour, your remaining trips are canceled.
Can I travel with someone?

Yes. Companions pay the same fare as the ADA-eligible rider. A personal care attendant rides at no additional cost. Children ages 7 to 11 may travel as companions and pay the same fare; a child 12 or older may accompany you as a personal care attendant at no additional cost. We reserve the right to require proof of age.

What assistance do drivers provide?

Service is curb-to-curb. Door-to-door assistance is provided to help with wheelchairs or to guide a rider, as long as the driver can stay within sight of the vehicle. Drivers cannot enter your residence, take you inside to appointments, or leave a vehicle unattended.

How do I pay for paratransit?

Use a Mobility MyWAVE smart card, a digital MAP ticket in your mobile wallet, or a credit or debit card. MyWAVE cards can be purchased at the GM&O Transportation Center for $4 and reloaded, and you can load MAP rides into your digital wallet with the MyWAVE mobile app.

Fares & payment

How much does it cost to ride?
Bus: $1.25. Microtransit: $1.25. Paratransit: $2.50. Transfers between bus and microtransit are free.
Are there discounts?

Yes. Discounts are available with ID for students, seniors 65+, riders with disabilities, and military. Children age 5 and under ride free with a fare-paying adult. Please carry appropriate ID when you ride.

Are passes available?

Weekly passes can be purchased at the GM&O Transportation Center or online.

How do I pay for my rides?

On the bus, pay onboard with cash, your MyWAVE card, the MyWAVE app, or a MyWAVE pass. For microtransit, add a debit, credit, or prepaid card when you create your account and your card is charged automatically after your ride; Apple Pay and Google Pay are also accepted. You can also pay onboard a microtransit vehicle with cash, your MyWAVE card, or the MyWAVE app.

How do I add or edit a payment method?

Navigate to the menu in the top left corner of the app and tap ‘Payment Methods’. Tap a method to edit it, or tap ‘Add a new payment method.’

Do I tip the driver?

No. Our drivers do not accept tips.

Why do I see a pending charge?

A hold is not a charge. When a new credit card is added, a $1 hold is placed to confirm the card is valid. When a ride is booked that is expected to cost more than $15, a hold is placed for the ride amount. Holds typically disappear within 3 to 5 business days, depending on your bank.

How can I dispute a no-show charge?

You may be charged for a no-show if you were not at your pickup point on time and the driver waited but you did not board or make contact. If you believe you were charged inaccurately, email support@ridesecondline.com.

How do I apply a promo code?

Open the menu in the top left corner of the app and select ‘Promo Codes’, then enter your code. Some promotions are time limited or restricted; if a code errors, it is likely no longer valid.

Accessibility

Are the buses and vehicles wheelchair accessible?
Yes. All Second Line Transit routes and vehicles are wheelchair accessible.
How do I request a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV)?

If you need a WAV, we’ll pick you up right at your door. To request one you must verify that you need wheelchair accessible service: tap ‘Accessibility’ in the app menu and complete the Accessibility Request form, or call (251) 344-6600.

I need door-to-door service but not a wheelchair accessible vehicle. What should I do?

Call Customer Support at (251) 344-6600 and we’ll set that up on your account.

Do distance caps apply to accessible trips?

Yes. Curb-to-curb rider settings override our mode preference and transfer rules, but the 6-mile weekday and 8-mile Saturday distance caps still apply.

Is paratransit the same as a wheelchair accessible microtransit ride?
No. Microtransit is open to everyone and offers wheelchair accessible vehicles on request. Paratransit is a separate ADA service for riders who are certified eligible, with prebooked, curb-to-curb trips. Eligible paratransit riders can use the bus and microtransit too.

How do I update my account information (phone number, name)?

General Policies

Zero tolerance policy

This service is powered by Via. Via has a strict Zero Tolerance policy. Driver partners are prohibited from driving on the Via Platform while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and riders are prohibited from consuming alcohol or drugs inside the vehicle. We do not tolerate inappropriate, threatening, or violent behavior by anyone using the Via Platform or towards any riders or driver partners. If you observe or believe any of the following, ask the driver to end the trip immediately: your driver may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol; your driver is behaving in a manner you consider inappropriate or that makes you feel unsafe; or your driver engages in conduct that could be unlawful. If you feel you are in imminent danger, call 911. After the ride, report the issue in the app, email support@ridesecondline.com, or call (251) 344-6600.

Anti-discrimination policy
Via does not tolerate discrimination of any kind against riders or driver partners. This includes discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religious belief or affiliation, gender, sex, sexual identity or orientation, age, veteran status, physical, mental, or other disability (actual or perceived), a rider’s points of departure and destination, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal or state law. Via also does not tolerate discrimination against service animals. Riders or driver partners found to have violated this policy will lose access to the Via Platform. Report concerns in the app’s review function or email support@ridesecondline.com
Cigarette policy

Smoking of any kind by riders and drivers is prohibited, including e-cigarettes, vaporizers, and smokeless cigarettes.

Eating & drinking policy
Please help us keep our vehicles clean and avoid bringing food and drink when possible. Be mindful that strong smelling food can be unpleasant for your fellow passengers. All drinks must have lids. Drinking alcohol or carrying open containers of alcohol in our vehicles is not allowed.
Phone call policy

Your fellow passengers might not be interested in your phone conversations. Please limit phone calls to quick logistics and emergencies during shared rides.

Luggage policy

Our vehicles are a shared space, so please limit personal items to a single piece of luggage or a reasonably sized bag.

Age policy

Riders must be 13 years of age or older to ride alone. Children under 13 can ride when accompanied by a parent or guardian. We do not supply car seats, but riders traveling with children who require them may bring their own. Riders are responsible for securing any car seat and for ensuring it meets all legal requirements.

Microtransit no-show and cancellation policy

Cancel as soon as you know you don’t need a ride. Repeated no-shows may result in a suspension of microtransit service.

Paratransit no-show policy
Drivers wait five minutes past your scheduled pickup time. After five minutes, the driver must continue on and the trip is recorded as a no-show. If you no-show on the first leg of a trip and do not contact our office within one hour, your remaining trips that day are canceled. A pattern of no-shows or abuse can result in suspension or denial of service, and riders are given an opportunity to be heard before a suspension takes effect unless the violation warrants immediate termination.
